Design in the time of Corona

September 1, 2020

The Coronavirus Pandemic will likely change the way we think about spreading germs for a long time to come. Stocking up on Clorox wipes and hand-sanitizer isn’t the only way to keep your home as clean as possible. There are a number of antibacterial materials you can incorporate into your home design that are both aesthetically pleasing, and naturally more sterile.

Metals such as copper, brass, and bronze are natural antimicrobial materials that have intrinsic properties to destroy a wide range of micro-organisms. Not only are these metals hygienic, but they are also great accents to warm your home! Think about swapping out your cabinet drawer pulls and doorknobs in places that are frequently touched, like your kitchen and bathroom.

Quartz is one of the hardest, non-precious stones on earth. Countertops made from quartz are hard, stain- and scratch-resistant, and the most sanitary. We’re all spending more time cooking at home these days, so upgrading your countertops to quartz will give your kitchen an instant facelift – with hygienic benefits as well as the ability to keep your increased red wine habit a secret (or is that just me?)!

Your floors probably get the most action of any surface in your home. Removing your shoes at the front door is a great way to avoid bringing bacteria into the home, but upgrading your flooring will do more than just change the look of your home. Woods like bamboo, oak, and cork stop bacteria and micro-organisms from growing.
